For almost two
decades, Ms. Matota has been at the forefront of facilitating community-based
natural resource management in Namibia. Due in part to her work, there are
now 14 community-based organizations in the Zambezi Region that manage
wildlife and other natural resources while generating benefits from trophy
hunting and tourism. Ms. Matota has spearheaded a craft development program
in the region, leading to more than 300 crafters improving their skills and
livelihoods through the sale of handmade baskets and other products. Ms. Matota’s greatest legacy to date has
been her promotion of women’s participation in natural resource management,
and her leadership in community health programs.
